PARISH SUNFLOWER COMPETITION

Riston Parish Council is delighted to run a Sunflower Growing Competition for 2025. 
The competition is primarily aimed at our school children but is open to all those who live in the Parish.  
 
We are looking for entrants to grow the TALLEST sunflower. 

All entries will be in the form of photographs.  

 
The photographs don’t need to contain your picture but MUST contain a reference to the height and width within them e.g. a picture of the sunflower with a tape measure next to it and a photograph of the sunflower head with a tape measure stretched across it would be ideal!

Only seeds supplied for free by the Council can be used (see below) *

 

Winning plants will be judged in the following way: 

 

Tallest sunflower

The flower will be measured from the highest tip of the top petal to where the plant naturally reaches the earth.    

 

In the event of a tie

Cut just behind the head and measured one side to the other.  The widest will be the winner. 

 

We must be able to see the exact measurement.  
Entries submitted with incomplete information, or found to contain invalid information will be deemed invalid entries. 

 

Opening date:

The competition will open on Monday, 7th April


Closing date

The closing date to submit your entry is: Sunday 31st August; this gives you the chance to nurture and grow your sunflower(s) over the summer and brighten your gardens.  
 
We aim to place all entries on our website and across our Social Media pages, so please ensure you tell us if you do not want your picture to be shared.

* The seeds are supplied in a small envelope, each containing four seeds.  

  • They are of the same variety and will grow up to 14 ft (4.25m) high.  

  • School children will be given an envelope each

  • There will be about 200 envelopes with seeds that will be available on first-come-first-served basis to the wider community (anyone who wants a go)

  • These can be collected from the Oasis Garage, on or after the opening day of the competition. 

  • The competition is open to Riston Parish residents and the students of Riston CoE Academy only.

 

Confirming dates 

The competition will open on Monday, 7th April and close on Sunday, 31st August 2025.

Quirkiest Plant (Any size) 

Winner: £30 

Runner up: £20

If you are aware of anyone in the Parish who does not have access to email and/or social media, who would like to take part in the competition, please help them to do so or let any of your Councillors know.
